What’s in a woman?

It has been another long week of paper typing and figure drawings but like we say at this time of the day every week, ‘Thank Goodness It’s Friday!’Image

Today, I am speaking about identity; we’ve had some fun identifying the Miss Stilts, Miss ‘i don’t have to look good’ and Miss ‘i don’t need a man’. There is no doubt many of you want to know about Miss ‘All I want is to feel loved’ and Miss ‘I will make him the one’ but I thought we should take a break from all that this week and address the core issue- identity.

Identity is a very big issue with women! Whether or not we choose to admit it, it’s an issue that plagues many of us for years and in some cases, even for decades. If you want to know the one questions that trips even the most intelligent woman, it’s the question she often asks herself when she is at cross-roads or sitting on the ground, beaten- “Who am I?”

Many times we find ourselves being pulled from left to right, swept around like dry leaves on an ocean wave; these days, it is becoming more and more evident that women have lost their sense of worth and I can’t help but ponder the question “What’s in a woman?”

You might say “is this question important? Does it change anything? Why do I need to define myself?” Simple! If you don’t know who you are, you don’t know what you have to offer, hence you keep selling yourself short, making questionable decisions and of course ending up in the wrong kinds of relationships.

Dear lady, who are you?

I had an interesting time during the course of the week, reading through the account of creation in the Bible. I can’t count the number of times I have read those chapters; I am confident I can even recite the verses but this week, something else jumped out at me that inspired this post so let’s head to where it all begins, shall we ladies?

The first two chapters of Genesis tell us about creation; how God took his time each day for six days to create everything from the oceans and vegetation to man. When God created Adam on the 6th day, He made him from the dust of the earth and breathed life into him. He placed Adam in the garden of Eden and well, focused on other things. “The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground- trees that were beautiful and produced delicious fruit….A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches….Then God placed man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it….”Genesis 2:9-17.  Pause at verse seventeen and take a deep breath. This is where everything changes; in verse 18, God said “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”

The two phrases from that verse always make me smile “It is not good that man should be alone…A helper who is just right for him.” I smile at those two phrases because I try to imagine how miserable Adam looked by himself that led God to say “Oh dear! This dude needs a companion.” Adam must have looked really lonely, finding it hard to tend to a whole garden by himself, he was probably sulking, looking for someone to talk to and wallowing in what could have led to depression had God not salvaged the situation. But God didn’t create woman right after that!

He first made all the wild animals and birds of the sky and took them to Adam to name them (Genesis 2:19), a task Adam must have been grateful for considering he was probably bored sitting by himself and I am guessing it was a matter of mix ‘n’ match at this point. Was Adam going to connect with a dog, a rabbit, a tiger?

But as Adam diligently worked at this task, God realized there was still no perfect partner for him. So God put Adam to sleep, took one of his ribs and made a woman!

Have you ever paused to wonder why no other creature was good enough for Adam? Because really, God could have said an orangutan is just perfect but he thought to himself, this man I have created needs someone warm, someone supportive, someone that is fragile yet strong- like a gem so He decided to make us women! not from the dust of the earth but from Adam’s rib! How special do you feel knowing that? God performed a surgery just to create me! Oh I bask in that love and special awesomeness!Image

From the source of our creation, one thing is pretty obvious- God put a bit of man in us! God made us from something strong! something that supports man’s body, something that makes has man’s blood cells, cartilage and all that anatomy gibberish (no offence darling anatomists)!

Besides putting a bit of man in us, God put in us, the wisdom to soothe bad situations, to console, to convince (Remember Eve’s convincing skills landed Adam in sin? but let’s not dwell on the sin part). God went an extra mile to create us. We are his most prized possession but we keep forgetting that. We stay in abusive relationships because we don’t know we are- i am not just referring to physical abuse; emotional abuse is the most common form of abuse these days- women want to feel loved even if they know it’s not real love (I am not introducing the Miss here); we give our bodies away just to gain attention, we accept to share our men because we say “Oh there aren’t enough men in the world” yet we get angry and broken when the mister decides to choose someone else as the winner of “Who shall win his heart” competition. There is one thing we forget completely!

Adam was all alone in the garden of Eden; he was miserable and bored. God saw that he needed some cheering up so God gave him a gift- Woman. If you can’t remember anything else from this post, please remember this: You are worth more than a hundred picassos, a thousand Matisses and a million Davincis. God went the extra mile just to create you; stop selling yourself short. You are a gift to man and he should cherish you and honour you. No man is doing you a favour by being with you so he shouldn’t mistreat you. You are his support system- worth more than the shiny car he’ll never scratch or the video game console he seems to be addicted to. Nothing can replace you in man’s life, not even a life-size doll!

Enjoy the weekend ladies! No cocktails for me this weekend. Tonight, I will be partying at Club bedroom with DJ Pillow! XOXO

  1. What a beautiful and inspiring post! It’s funny how God works. This week, I’ve been talking to & advising a woman on this very issue of worth & identity. A woman twice my age mind you! …I’m going to print this out, I think she needs to read this:-)…who am I? A question that baffles when we don’t know The Source of Life.
